《魔戒三部曲》：佛羅多的奇幻旅程

電影《魔戒》裡的哈比人佛羅多是全人類的希望，他肩上背負的是將魔戒催毀的重擔，只要他成功將魔戒丟入熔岩火山裡，他就是拯救世界的英雄。可是，佛羅多之所以成為魔戒的持有者，可不是因為他想當什麼偉大的英雄，佛羅多只是隨著甘道夫的指引一步步前進而已，只是他知道，他走的是一條救世之路，是不允許回頭的，所以只能被迫向前，始終沒有其他選擇。

不像甘道夫博學，也不像亞拉岡勇猛，更沒有勒苟拉斯和金歷善戰，魔戒裡的大英雄佛羅多，自始至終是個平凡的哈比人，和正常人一樣，遇到危險不是勇敢面對，而是先想辦法閃躲，遇到挫折也經常動搖，在他歷經的奇幻旅程裡，有三個橋段讓我印象很深。

第一個，是佛羅多在摩瑞亞礦坑裡和甘道夫的對話。

「我真希望魔戒從未到我的手中，真希望一切從未發生。」佛羅多說。

I wish the Ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened.

「每個遇到困難的人都會這麼想，但我們無法決定自己的命運。」甘道夫回答。

So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decides.

「我們所能決定的，就是在面對難關時做出選擇。」

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

「佛羅多，在這個世界上還有許多邪惡以外的力量。」

There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil.

「比爾博注定要找到魔戒，而你，也注定會得到魔戒。」

Bilbo was meant to find the Ring.In which case, you also were meant to have it.

「這樣一想，心裡就舒服多了吧。」

And that is an encouraging thought.

第二個，是戒靈徘徊在奧斯吉利亞斯城上空，即將從失去意識的佛羅多手中奪走魔戒，山姆及時出手阻止，讓佛羅多從魔戒的控制中回復意識，那時山姆對佛羅多說：

「我們根本就不該來，但是我們來了。」

We shouldn’t even be here.But we are.

「這就像一個精彩的故事，在歌頌偉大的事蹟。」

It’s like in the great stories.Mr. Frodo.The ones that really mattered.」

「充滿了黑暗和危險，有時候你不想知道結局……」

Full of darkness and danger they were.And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end……

「因為怎麼可能有快樂的結局？」

Because how could the end be happy?

「發生了這麼多可怕的事，這個世界怎麼可能回到從前？」

How could the world go back to the way it was…when so much bad had happened?

「但是到了最後，那個可怕的陰影終究會消失，就連黑暗也會。」

But in the end, it’s only a passing thing…this shadow.Even darkness must pass.

「嶄新的一天將會來臨，太陽也會散發出明亮的光芒，這才是讓人永生難忘、意義非凡的故事。」

A new day will come.And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer.Those were the stories that stayed with you…that meant something.

「這些故事裡的主角…有很多機會半途而廢，但是他們沒有，他們選擇不斷向前…因為他們懷抱著一種信念。」

Folk in those stories…had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going…because they were holding on to something.

佛羅多問：「我們抱著什麼信念？」

What are we holding on to, Sam?

「這個世界一定存在許多好的事情，值得我們奮戰到底。」山姆說。

That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo.And it’s worth fighting for.

第三個，是佛羅多與山姆歷經各種奇幻旅程，度過大大小小的生死難關後，總算將魔戒帶到熔岩火山下準備將其毀滅，但佛羅多卻因魔戒的影響而逐漸體力不支，最終昏倒在半山腰。還記得當時，山姆是這樣鼓舞他前進的：

「佛羅多，你還記得夏爾嗎？」

Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo?

「春天就要來了，果樹即將開花。」

It’ll be spring soon, and the orchards will be in blossom.

「鳥兒也開始會在榛樹上築巢。」

And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket.

「大家會到田園裡收割大麥…然後吃著沾滿鮮奶油的現摘草莓。」

And they’ll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields……and eating the first of the strawberries with cream.

「你還記得草莓的味道嗎？」

Do you remember the taste of strawberries?

「不，山姆，我不記得食物的味道了…」佛羅多說。

「No,Sam.I can’t recall the taste of food…」Frodo said.

「也不記得故鄉的流水聲…以及麥草的觸感。」

「nor the sound of water…nor the touch of grass.」

「我…我感覺自己正赤裸地站在黑暗裡，這裡什麼都沒有。」

「I’m…naked in the dark.There is nothing.」

「我和黑魔王索倫之間沒有任何阻礙，我的雙眼，可以很清楚地看見他。」

「No veil between me and the wheel of fire.I can see him…with my waking eyes.」

山姆立即答道：「那就把魔戒毀掉吧…讓它永遠消失。」

Then let us be rid of it…once and for all.

「來吧，佛羅多，我不能替你背負這重擔…但我可以背你前進。」

Come Frodo, I can’t carry it for you…but I can carry you.
